Mile 21 in a marathon or why 2010 will be a good year for most of us.

I used to do a lot of distance running. My body, (in its younger form) was built for it and I liked the fact that it required more head and heart then it did muscle. During a marathon most of us have a point, a certain mile marker, where we know if we made it that far we can make it the rest of the way. For me, it was mile 21. When I saw that sign I knew I had a lot more work ahead of me, but my experience and training told me I was going to make it. I still did not know exactly how well I would place, but I knew I was going to make it to the end.
I think 2010 is going to be much like that for most of us as business owners. If we made it this far it is because we controlled our expenses, didn’t give up during the tough times and used a combination of head, heart and muscle to stay on course. We may be a little worn down and beat up, we may have seen some partners and clients drop out, but we are going to make it. And that is something to be proud of.
2010 is going to drive growth and reinvestment. Most of us, me included, have done so much to wring out efficiencies that we need to reinvest in our business. I will be adding staff and have already invested in more business automation. I have purchased some new servers at sharp discounts and replaced several desktop PC’s. Like a runner, I am taking the opportunity to replenish myself so I can finish strong and not waste away.
2010 might not be a cakewalk, there will be more job losses, more business closures but the trend will be towards the better. I approached 2009 with a “hunker down, grind it out” mentality, I needed to. 2010 feels lighter and brighter. The miles are still hard but there will be a little more spring in my step. I hope it feels the same way for you because this marathon doesn’t end at 26.2 miles. It keeps going and going until we give up or blow up.
It is not a race, it is a journey! Happy New Year.
